最新的研究成果,本论文的主要观点为Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) was an outstanding representative of the school of British Realism at the end of the 19th century, enjoying great international fame。 In his long lifetime, Hardy witnessed the devastating impact of the two industrial revolutions and the first World War on the agricultural civilization。 Therefore, the capitalist wave swept the whole countryside。 As a lover of ordinary rural life, Hardy tends to describe the pastoral elegy。 He wrote nearly 20 novels in his life。 Tess of the D’Urbervilles, published in 1891, was the most typical one of his “Novels of Character and Environment” which established his position in the history of British and even world literature。 Through Tess’s tragic experience and her powerless resistance, the novel vividly represents the author’s pessimistic outlook on life。 This paper intends to analyze the deep causes and concrete embodiments of Tess’s tragic fate from the perspective of pessimism。 The full paper is divided into four parts: The first part introduces the life of the author, the story of the novel and the current research situation at home and abroad; the second part describes the embodiments of Hardy’s pessimism in the novel, mainly from the experience, behavior and characteristics of the heroine Tess; the third one focuses on Tess’s family background, rural status and the author’s fatalism, analyzing the profound causes of her tragic fate; the last part summarizes the full text。 This paper holds that Tess’s tragedy is also a social tragedy, trying to make readers have a more detailed understanding of profound connotation of the novel and the beauty of the author’s artistic creation。不知是否符合录用要求,望您批评与指正。
