与小说、散文、诗歌等文学体裁相比，戏剧的矛盾冲突尤为激烈。这种矛盾冲突不仅发生在人物与人物、人物与社会之间，还来自于人物的内心世界。激烈的矛盾冲突是通过精彩的人物对话和独白表现出来的。这时候，人物语言常常是显得语无伦次，相互矛盾。这段情节通过威利自相矛盾的表述进一步揭示了这位小人物的性格特点和复杂内心活动。

Willy : It’s contacts, Charly, I got important contacts!

[He laughs at Willy and exits]

Willy   [Turning to Ben] business is bad. It’s murderous. But not for me,

 of course.
