摘要 《刀锋》是英国现代著名作家威廉·萨默赛特·毛姆的一部重要代表作,在这部长篇小说中,他笔下的印度给人留下了深刻印象。《刀锋》中的印度不仅远离世俗,拥有着原始人与自然的和谐,并且还象征着一种对精神解脱的追求。毛姆对这种形象的塑造是基于其对这个国度的探索和他对印度文化的理解,以及一战后大的时代背景。印度之于毛姆,是他第一次完全跳出了西方文化圈,真正来到东方的尝试,并且他首次对人生的意义做出了肯定;同时,这一形象之于跨文化研究的意义也是巨大的。 The Razor’s Edge is an important representative of the famous modern British writer William Somerset Maugham.In this novel,India portrayed by Maugham is very impressive.The characteristics of Indian image involves not only being far away from profane material and the harmony between human and nature,but also the pursuit of spiritual liberty.In fact,the characteristics are not only based on Maugham’s exploration of India and his understanding of Indian culture,but was also associated closely with the background of the World War I.For the writer himself,it is the first time that Maugham jumped out of the Western cultural circle and came to the East,and he found his outlet of spirit and affirmed the meaning of life for the first time.Meanwhile,the switching perspectives of Eastern and Western cultures in this novel is of great significance to intercultural study.
