1. Literature Review

Some scholars have conducted extensive discussions and researches on Ishiguro Kazuo’s The Remains of the Day. In Kathleen Wall’s paper The Remains of the Day and Its Challenges to Theories of Unreliable Narration,he points out his opinion that “Ishiguro’s most recent novel is as much about unreliability as it is about the conflict between the public and the private personae, between professional and human duty, between the facade of dignity and the expression of emotion” (Wall 16). From the perspective of the unreliable first-person narrator, it highlights the contradictions and oppositions within the narrative subject. In the paper Ishiguro's "Remains of the Day": The Empire Strikes Back, Meera holds the view that The Remains of the Day is the dismantling of Britain’s colonial empire, mentioned only as the date on which the narrative begins, which provides the determining historical context of the characters’ attitudes and aspirations” (Tamaya 45). In Zen Comedy in Postcolonial Literature: Kazuo Ishiguro's "The Remains of the Day",John Rothfork proposes that this novel expresses Buddhism's criticism of Confucian ethics, which is the foundation of Japanese culture (Rothfork 84).
