From the perspective of the unreliable first-person narrator, it highlights the contradictions and oppositions within the narrative subject. In the paper Ishiguro's "Remains of the Day": The Empire Strikes Back, Meera holds the view that The Remains of the Day is the dismantling of Britain’s colonial empire, mentioned only as the date on which the narrative begins, which provides the determining historical context of the characters’ attitudes and aspirations” (Tamaya 45). In Zen Comedy in Postcolonial Literature: Kazuo Ishiguro's "The Remains of the Day"，John Rothfork proposes that this novel expresses Buddhism's criticism of Confucian ethics, which is the foundation of Japanese culture (Rothfork 84).
